To show up in AI search results, publish clear, accurate, well-structured content and allow the search crawlers that surface it — OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot. Google states plainly that no special markup, files or optimisation are required for its AI features. Almost everything being sold as AI SEO beyond that is undocumented.

This topic has more confident misinformation attached to it than any other in local search. Most of the tactics being marketed are either contradicted by the platforms' own documentation or unmeasurable by any tool available to you.

What follows is limited to what the platforms actually publish, plus an honest list of what nobody knows. If you want the underlying local mechanics first, see how Google ranks local businesses.

The short answer

  • Google states no special optimisation or markup is needed for its AI features.
  • Google says its search does not use llms.txt — publishing one neither helps nor hurts.
  • Blocking GPTBot stops training. Blocking OAI-SearchBot removes you from ChatGPT search.
  • No AI platform documents a single ranking factor for local answers.
  • You cannot measure AI visibility in Search Console — it is folded into Web.

What Google actually says about optimising for AI

Google's documentation states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimisations necessary. It says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files, or special structured data to appear in these features.

Google's own framing is that optimising for its generative AI features is optimising for search — still SEO. That single sentence invalidates a large share of what is currently sold as a separate AI SEO service.

The four claims to stop paying for

Four AI SEO tactics are actively marketed despite being contradicted by primary documentation: publishing an llms.txt file, adding FAQ schema for rich results, adding HowTo schema, and blocking GPTBot to control your AI presence.

Marketed tactic versus documented reality
ClaimWhat the documentation says
Publish an llms.txt file so AI can find youGoogle states its search does not use them; it will neither harm nor help
Add FAQ schema for rich resultsFAQ rich results are no longer shown in Google Search results
Add HowTo schemaDeprecated — no longer shown
Block GPTBot to control AIThat opts out of training only; it does not affect ChatGPT search visibility
Special schema makes you AI-visibleGoogle: no special structured data is needed for its AI features

None of this means schema is pointless. Structured data still helps machines read your business accurately, which matters for the entity clarity discussed below. It just does not buy AI placement, and the rich-result rewards two of these once carried are gone.

The crawler distinction almost everyone gets backwards

OpenAI runs separate bots for separate jobs. GPTBot is for model training. OAI-SearchBot is what surfaces sites in ChatGPT's search features — and OpenAI states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.

This matters because a wave of advice told site owners to block GPTBot to protect their content. Done carelessly, some of those blocks caught the search bot as well — removing the site from ChatGPT's answers while doing nothing about training.

  • ☐ Allow OAI-SearchBot if you want to appear in ChatGPT search answers
  • ☐ Allow PerplexityBot if you want Perplexity to surface and link you
  • ☐ Allow Claude-SearchBot for the same reason
  • ☐ Decide GPTBot separately — that choice is about training, not visibility

Check your own robots file before assuming this is fine. Blocking the wrong line is one of the few genuinely self-inflicted AI visibility problems, and it is free to fix.

What actually appears to help

The same practitioner survey that scores local ranking also scores AI search visibility, and the order flips: on-page website content carries roughly double the weight of the Business Profile. Clear, accurate, well-structured pages are the documented lever.

That inversion is the practical takeaway. For the map pack, your Business Profile does the heavy lifting. For AI answers, your website does. A business relying on its profile alone is optimised for one surface and absent from the other — and if the profile is not appearing either, start with why your business isn't showing up on Google.

  • Answer real questions directly, in the first sentences, in plain language.
  • Keep your business identity consistent — same name, service area and details everywhere.
  • Make sure content is in the served HTML, not assembled only after scripts run.
  • Publish things that are checkably true, since the systems quoting you are increasingly cross-checked by readers.
  • Give each service and each town you genuinely serve its own page — see pages for every town you serve.

Note how ordinary that list is. It is the same work that earns featured snippets and serves human readers well, which is exactly what Google says it should be.

The honest unknowns

No AI platform documents a single ranking factor for local answers. There is no equivalent of a Business Profile for ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude, no claim process, and no analytics. And Search Console folds AI traffic into its Web type, so it cannot be isolated.

That last point deserves emphasis. If a provider shows you a report of your AI Overview traffic drawn from Search Console, they are inferring it, because the breakout does not exist. Ask how the number was derived before you act on it.

Those studies are United States panel surveys, and no comparable Canadian or Alberta dataset exists publicly. Treat the direction as real and the precise figures as not yet established here.

What to actually do this month

Check your robots file for a mis-set AI crawler rule, make sure your content is in the served HTML, keep your business details consistent everywhere, and stop paying for llms.txt files and deprecated schema.

  1. Open your robots file and confirm OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot are not blocked.
  2. Confirm your key pages render their content without JavaScript — AI crawlers largely do not run it.
  3. Make your business name, service area and contact details identical across your site and profile.
  4. Cancel anything you are paying for that is on the myths list above.
  5. Keep publishing genuinely useful pages — the documented lever has not changed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an llms.txt file to show up in AI search?

No. Google states that its search does not use these files and that creating one will neither harm nor help. No major AI platform documents consuming llms.txt for retrieval. It remains an unratified proposal rather than an adopted standard.

Does special schema markup get me into AI Overviews?

No. Google's documentation states there is no special structured data you need to add to appear in its AI features, and no additional requirements or optimisations. Structured data still helps machines read your business accurately, but it does not buy AI placement.

Should I block GPTBot?

That is a training decision, not a visibility one. Blocking GPTBot opts your content out of model training. Blocking OAI-SearchBot is what removes you from ChatGPT search answers, so check which one your robots file actually blocks before assuming either.

How do I measure my AI search visibility?

You largely cannot, with the tools available. Search Console folds AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic into the Web search type with no separate breakout. Any report claiming to show your AI traffic from Search Console is inferring it rather than measuring it.

Is AI search replacing Google for finding local businesses?

Not currently. Survey research found a small share of consumers begin a local search on AI tools, most use several channels, and only a minority would contact a business on an AI recommendation alone. It is an additional starting point people tend to verify.

What is the single best thing I can do for AI visibility?

Publish accurate, clearly structured content that answers real questions, and make sure it is present in your served HTML. Practitioner scoring puts on-page content ahead of your Business Profile for AI visibility, which is the reverse of the map pack.
