If your business is not showing up on Google, the cause is almost always one of eight things: the profile is unverified, suspended, ineligible, duplicated, wrongly categorised, too far from the searcher, hiding its address, or simply too new. Work through the checks in order below — each one rules something out, so you stop guessing and start fixing the right thing.

Most articles answering "why isn't my business showing up on Google" hand you a list of thirteen possible reasons and leave you to guess which is yours. That is not a diagnosis, it is a menu. This guide is ordered deliberately: each check narrows the problem, and several of them take under a minute.

Work top to bottom. If a check passes, move on. The moment one fails, you have found your problem — fix that before touching anything else, because the later items assume the earlier ones are healthy.

The short answer

  • Search your exact business name first — that single check splits the problem in two.
  • A suspended profile can still look normal to you while being invisible to customers.
  • Distance from the searcher is a real ceiling, and no amount of effort removes it.
  • Hiding your address widens your radius but weakens it — that trade-off is deliberate.
  • Google states plainly there is no way to pay for a better local ranking.

Check 1: Does your profile appear when you search your exact business name?

Search your full business name plus your town, on a phone, while signed out of your Google account. If your profile appears, you have a ranking problem. If it does not appear at all, you have an existence problem — and those two need completely different fixes.

This is the single most useful minute you can spend, because it splits every remaining possibility into two branches. Signing out matters: signed in, Google shows you your own business more readily than it shows a stranger, and plenty of owners have been reassured by a result nobody else can see.

Check 2: Is the profile verified — or quietly suspended?

An unverified profile has limited visibility. A suspended one may be worse than it looks: a soft suspension leaves the profile visible on Search and Maps while stripping your control, so it can appear healthy from the outside while you have lost the ability to manage it.

Practitioners distinguish two states. A soft suspension keeps the listing publicly visible but shows it as unclaimed, with your management access removed. A hard suspension removes the listing from Search and Maps entirely. Owners routinely discover the soft kind weeks late, because nothing obviously broke.

  • ☐ Open your Business Profile manager and look for a suspension notice
  • ☐ Check whether the public listing offers strangers a "Claim this business" link
  • ☐ Confirm which verification method Google has assigned you — it is chosen automatically and cannot be changed
  • ☐ If you were asked for video verification, note that recordings must be made live on a mobile device, not uploaded

Check 3: Is your business actually eligible for a profile?

Google requires that a business either has a location customers can visit, or travels to customers where they are. Online-only businesses are not eligible. Virtual offices and mailbox addresses are explicitly not acceptable, and using one is a common cause of suspension.

Google's guidelines state that a rented mailing address you do not operate from — a virtual office — is not eligible for a Business Profile, and that P.O. boxes or mailboxes at remote locations are not acceptable. Renting a Calgary address to appear in Calgary searches is one of the most reliable ways to lose a listing you already had.

The same guidelines prohibit creating more than one page for each location. If someone at your business created a listing years ago and a second was added later, the duplicate can suppress both. That is Check 4.

Check 4: Are there duplicate listings or mismatched details?

Duplicate profiles for one location compete with each other and can suppress both. Mismatched details across your website, profile, and directories make it harder for Google to treat them as one business. Search your business name, your phone number, and your old business name if you have rebranded.

Search your phone number in Google as its own query — duplicates often surface that way when a name search misses them. Then confirm your name, address format, and phone are written identically on your website, your profile, and any directory that lists you. Consistency is not a ranking trick; it is how Google confirms two records describe the same business.

Check 5: Is your primary category right?

Your primary category is consistently rated the strongest single factor in local pack ranking. Google's guidance is to use as few categories as possible and to pick ones that complete the sentence "this business IS a" rather than "this business HAS a".

This is the highest-leverage field on the entire profile, and it is free to change. A renovation company listed under "General contractor" when its actual demand is "Bathroom remodeler" is competing in the wrong race. If you serve several distinct trades, the primary category should match the work you most want to be called about.

The mechanics of how categories, distance, and prominence interact are covered in how Google ranks local businesses.

Check 6: Are you simply too far away from the searcher?

Google names distance as one of three main local ranking factors — how far your business is from the person searching. Proximity is consistently rated near the top of what determines the local pack, and it is the one factor you cannot influence at all.

This is the check that saves the most wasted money, and almost nobody publishes it honestly. A Cochrane business will struggle to appear in the local pack for someone searching in central Calgary, no matter how good the profile is — because that searcher has dozens of closer options.

That is not a reason to give up on Calgary. It is a reason to compete for it in the regular organic results rather than the map pack, which is a website job rather than a profile job. Whether you need a page for every town you serve covers exactly how far that can honestly be taken.

Check 7: Have you hidden your address — and do you understand the trade-off?

If you work from home and hide your address, you become a service-area business. Google says you should only hide your address if that is genuinely what you are. The trade-off is real: a hidden address gives you a wider but weaker ranking radius, while a shown address gives you a tighter, stronger one.

This nuance is missing from nearly every article on the subject, and it explains a lot of confusion. Practitioner testing converged on a clear conclusion: it is not the service areas you list that move rankings — it is whether your address is shown or hidden. Service areas themselves are largely a map overlay for customers, not a ranking lever.

Google also caps the arrangement: you can have up to 20 service areas, and the boundaries of your overall area should not be more than about two hours of driving time from where your business is based. The full setup, including what to do when your home address leaks into search anyway, is in Google Business Profile without a storefront.

Check 8: Is the profile too new, or is the website itself the weak link?

New profiles take time to settle, and a thin or slow website limits how far a healthy profile can carry you. Search your own domain to confirm your site is indexed at all — if your website is invisible, your profile is doing the work alone.

Search your domain directly to confirm Google has indexed it. If nothing appears after a few weeks live, the problem is on the website side rather than the profile side, and no amount of profile work will compensate.

Coverage across a wide service area is won page by page, not by adding pins to a map.

There is a structural reason the website matters more than most profile advice admits. In the industry's annual expert survey, the strongest single factor in local organic results is having a dedicated page for each service you offer — a website job, not a profile job. And the same survey's AI-visibility scoring puts on-page content ahead of the Business Profile, which is the reverse of the map pack.

What to fix first, in order

Fix existence before ranking. Verification and suspension come first, then eligibility and duplicates, then category. Only once those are healthy is it worth investing in reviews, content, and service pages — the slower work that compounds.

  1. Resolve any suspension or verification problem — nothing else matters until the profile is live and yours.
  2. Remove duplicates and make your name, address, and phone identical everywhere.
  3. Set the primary category to the work you most want to be called about.
  4. Decide honestly whether you are a service-area business, and set the address accordingly.
  5. Then start the long game: genuine reviews, a page per service, and content that answers real local questions.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my business show up for me but not for my customers?

Signed in to your own Google account, Google shows you your business more readily than it shows a stranger. Always check while signed out, on a phone, using the search terms a customer would use. If it only appears for you, treat it as not appearing at all.

How long does it take for a new business to show up on Google?

Verification itself can take from a few minutes by phone or email to around five business days for video, and postcard codes expire after 30 days. Appearing consistently in competitive searches takes considerably longer, because prominence builds gradually rather than switching on.

Can I pay Google to rank higher in the local results?

No. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. You can pay for ads, which appear as ads, but the organic local pack cannot be bought. Any provider promising guaranteed placement is describing something Google says does not exist.

Why does a competitor with fewer reviews outrank me?

Because reviews are one factor among many, and rarely the decisive one. Primary category, proximity to the searcher, and the business name itself are all rated more heavily in the local pack. A closer competitor in the right category can outrank a better-reviewed business further away.

Is my Google Business Profile suspended if it says claim this business?

Possibly. A profile showing a claim link to the public while you have lost management access is the pattern of a soft suspension. It can also simply mean the listing was never verified by you. Check your Business Profile manager for a suspension notice before assuming either.

Do I still need a website if I have a Google Business Profile?

Yes. Google itself offered local businesses free websites and then shut them down in 2024, which is the clearest possible demonstration of platform risk. A profile is also outranked by on-page content in AI search visibility, so the website carries work the profile cannot.

Does adding more service areas help me rank in more towns?

No. Testing by local search practitioners found service areas do not drive rankings for service-area businesses; they function mainly as a map overlay for customers. What changes your reach is whether your address is shown or hidden, and Google caps areas at 20.
